Abstract in different language: Basque nationalism is a phenomenon that emerged at the end of the 19th century and remains alive until today. It had its ups and downs in the course of the 20th century, and during this period it changed the way it manifested itself. This article in- troduces Basque nationalism, along with the circum- stances and architects of its origin. It focuses primar- ily on the transformation of Basque nationalism and on the changes in its form and ideological orientation ac- cording to the development of the Basque Country, or Spain as the case may be, from the end of the 19th cen- tury up to the present day. These changes are linked to the transformation of Basque society itself and of the way that the Basque national identity is being con- structed. At the same time, we can observe a refusal of the traditional conception of Basque nationality that was typical of the first nationalists.
