dc.description.abstract-translated | This study is based on the assumption that our understanding of reality, i.e. Islam in this case, is primarily shaped by the mass media: it is the mass media that create value frameworks which help us understand not only the individual key terms of everyday reality, but also the entire discourses that shape it. In this particular study, we have focused on the issues related to the wearing of a hijab, a burqa or a niq¯ab, which the media present as one of the four most frequently identified threats supposedly permeating the space occupied by western civilization (including the Czech Republic). We analyzed texts published between 1996 and 2013 in all regional and national daily newspapers using the agenda-setting theory, or, to be more precise, a particular segment of this theory – the attribute-agenda setting theory. The aim of this article is (1) to outline a particular methodological procedure still quite uncommon in the field of religious studies, and (2) to point out the various attributes that the Czech media link to particular particles of clothing (burqa, niq¯ab and hijab). | en |
