Abstract in different language: This article deals with the personality of the 1st Duke of Buckingham, especially his work as the head of the English Navy in 1618–1628. The introduction of the article outlines the situation in England and throughout Europe, especially in the early 17th century. Other parts of the paper are already dealing with George Villiers and the English Navy, with particular attention to the expeditions to Algiers, Cadiz and La Rochelle and the consequences thereof.
