Abstract in different language: This study analyzes developments in the field of study of political clientelism over the course of the last 50 years. It will focus on a broad spectrum of literature, but will also pay attention to particular research carried out in Latin America. The main goal is to analyze the theoretical assumptions used by scholars and contextualize their research into three phases of clientelism study. The first phase is characterized by the predominant theory of modernization and analyses the first division of the study of clientelism from anthropological and historical literature. The second focuses on broader structural theories and institutional variables. The third turns its attention back to modernization theory, which is complemented by research on the impact of political competition on different forms of clientelism.
