Abstract in different language: This article deals with the problem of statehood of the Slovak State (or the so-called first Slovak Republic). Its aim is to find an answer to whether the Slovak State was a state or an entity different from a state. The analysis is based upon historical facts relating to international relations of the Slovak State including its acceptance by the international community at the time. This study contains deliberations on (a) the hypothesis of the non-existence of the Slovak State from the viewpoint of international public law due to its short persistence; (b) application of the declaratory theory of recognition and the constitutive theory of recognition of the Slovak State; (c) the criteria of statehood in the case of the Slovak State; and (d) the conception of the legal continuity of Czechoslovakia.
