Abstract in different language: This study describes the Japanese expedition to Taiwan in 1874. The expedition was a part of Japan’s transformation from a traditional and conservative Asian state to one supporting a programme of modernization, leading it to become a rapidly prosperous state that was newly inspired by Western values. This change, however, caused relations to deteriorate with its other Asian neighbours Korea and China. While the growing conflict with Korea culminated in Japan’s invasion of the Korean Peninsula, the dispute with China was reflected in Japan’s efforts to expand into Taiwan and the Ryukyu Archipelago. The expedition to Taiwan in 1874 was a manifestation of Japan’s efforts to gain dominance in the region. Although Japanese units withdrew from Taiwan without significant success, part of the conflict was the subsequent incorporation of the Ryukyu Archipelago into the Japanese Empire.
