dc.description.abstract-translatedThe subject of this study is the historical analysis of so called “Coal Railways” from the beginning till the twenties of the 20th century, i.e. railway companies formed primarily to coal transportation especially in the region of North-Western Bohemia. The explored task is the economic success of the Coal Railways, eventually how their success was achieved, as well as the interrogation, if they developed differently from other railway companies. The study does analyse the ownership of Coal Railways, as well as their eventual vertical integration with ownership of coal mines. The first part is describing the development of the railway network in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy focusing on the ownership of the companies and the relationship between the economic success and the state transportation policy. The focus is laid on the description of the individual Coal Railways and their relationship with the coal district they were engaged in. The result of the study is the validation of the hypothesis about the different economic development of the Coal Railways. Expecting their profitability, the state did not grant the Coal Railways any guaranties for the invested capital and in consequence the Coal Railways remained in private ownership in the long term. The link to the coal mines was however not sufficient for a long-term profitability. It was important to be the first to come at the respective route and to run the railway as effective as possible.en
