W.V.O. Quine, Wilfrid Sellars a Donald Davidson. |
Abstract in different language: | The thesis is primarily concerned with Richard Rorty and the question of linguistic idealism. Rorty's work is analyzed in the context of three other authors, whom Rorty uses as some of his main argumentative support in defending his theses, i.e. W.V.O. Quine, Wilfrid Sellars and Donald Davidson. After interpreting Rorty´s ties to these other three, I go on to analyze, what elements of linguistic idealism can be found in each of the four authors and how they could be defended against an idealism charge. I argue that the charge of linguistic idealism makes sense only on the basis of a certain picture of our relation to the world, which assumes a confrontation of mind or language with the rest of the world. I opt for the opinion that at least Davidson and Rorty put forward a different picture of our relation to the world, one in which the thought of linguistic idealism should not arise. |
